Nguyen Le Tung has spent 13 of the last 18 years of his life overseas. He obtained his bachelor’s degree in Thailand before moving to the United States for his master’s degree. He then moved back to Vietnam for five years, before relocating to Singapore to pursue a better career opportunity.
“I like to say that I travel to find my way back home,” said Tung, “So I’ve never doubted that I would eventually move back to Vietnam – where my home is.”
It was his fifth year in Singapore when his son started his pre-school education. Tung realised that it may be time to start thinking about his plans to move back home to Vietnam permanently.
“Although Singapore has an excellent education system, I’ve always wanted for my child to be fluent in Vietnamese. I believe that the language to him understanding his roots in the future and I wanted him to pick up the language from a young age. Although my wife and I speak Vietnamese to him, it’s simply not the same as being surrounded by the language,” said Tung. “Along with the fact that my parents are growing older, this reason pushed me to really start looking for opportunities back home.”
Tung was looking for jobs online when he came across the Come Home Pho Good campaign by Robert Walters Vietnam. He reached out to the international candidate manager (ICM) and they spoke about his career goals, motivations and reasons for moving home. The ICM then passed on his information to the relevant consultant who saw that his skills and experience would be highly valued by employers in Vietnam. The consultant proactively approached numerous companies with Tung’s profile, with several indicating their interest.
“I moved to Singapore in 2014 because the career opportunities there looked far more competitive then but the opportunities in Vietnam today are as just as exciting,” shared Tung, “The position Robert Walters introduced me was extremely attractive and I found myself excited at the prospect of working in Vietnam for Boston Scientific, one the world’s leading manufacturer of medical devices.”
Tung has since moved back to Vietnam with his family and started work as market development manager. He shares that the role was perfectly matched with his ambitions of taking on regional responsibilities.
“Given I had been away from Vietnam for the past few years, I was initially worried about finding a good job with a reputable company that has a professional environment. Robert Walters not only helped me secure a job – it found me a career that was aligned with my own goals and expectations.”
Tung encourages overseas Vietnamese to consider returning home to Vietnam when looking for the next challenge in their careers. “Vietnam has changed so rapidly in the past few years and I believe it will only continue to grow. The country is full of potential – young overseas Vietnamese should certainly take advantage of the opportunities in Vietnam to accelerate their careers.”
